Copywriting + Marketing Consulting For Professional Service Businesses

I was cruising in my car when a radio ad spot for a local BMW dealer came over the stereo. It was back in early April as the true gravity of the coronavirus pandemic had genuinely begun to sink in.

The ad was a simple, straightforward 15-second promo. The deanship manager stated, with earnest sincerity: “We’re all in this together” (appropriately acknowledging the coronavirus crisis). Also added that the dealership: “Is here for you.”

Now, I’ve never owned a BMW.

Mostly, because pricey, German engineered status-mobiles aren’t my thing (however, that’s just me).

But even if I was a BMW owner, I have a hunch that if I showed up at the dealership with my hand out, taking them up on their pledge to be “there for me”, I’d be swiftly ushered back to Wilshire Boulevard, and left with an empty palm.

Or course, loads and loads of businesses, big and small, have similarly played “we’re all in this together” card. So, I don’t mean to pick on BMW dealers.

But this naked PR grabs aside, there is an important takeaway here…

No One is Coming to Your Rescue

Not BMW. Not your insurance company (despite their promises). Not your landlord (irrespective of any “eviction moratoriums”). And definitely not the bank holding the note on your mortgage.

Sure, they’re all talking a good game. Right now, anyway.

But make absolutely NO MISTAKE on this front: They ALL expect to be paid.

And their collective empathy, expressed in the “touchy-feely” acknowledgment that “we’re all in this together,” is borne of a desire to get a hold of your cash.

Now, that’s not a criticism. It’s the reality of living in a capitalist society.

We all — you, me, the folks at BMW, along with most everyone else — are on the hook to generate income in order to put food on the table, keep a roof over our heads, and electricity flowing to our Netflix enabled smart TVs.

Which Means… It’s Imperative That You Continue to Market Your Service

Actively soliciting new leads and nurturing those leads, in addition to remaining in touch with current clients, continually fostering those exiting relationships are all key to ensuring your business continues to grow and thrive. (PHEW 34 words that’s a long sentence — but it NEEDS to be said!)

Here’s the Bottom Line (to quote a tired cliche)…

You know the “it” we’re supposedly all “in together?” Well, your business won’t survive “it,” unless you continue to push forward.

Because the moment you take your foot off the gas, your eyes off the prize, or otherwise lose sight of your goals, your enterprise is headed for a disastrous end. Crash. Burn. Flames. Goodbye.
